After a long battle with illness, Noel Neill, the woman who first played the role of Lois Lane, has died at the age of 95. The news broke on Sunday, after the actress’s manager revealed the news via a Facebook Post. He did not specify what illness Neill was suffering from, just that she had lost the battle at her home in Tuscon, Arizona.

Neill is best known for playing Lois Lane in the 1948 Superman film and then again in Atom Man vx. Superman in 1950. She would later go on to portray Lois Lane in The Adventures of Superman on television. Neill eventually left the role of Lane behind, but did not leave Superman behind, for she returned to the franchise as various characters in later films.

“She was kind, selfless, hardworking, funny with a quick wit, and assertive – all the same qualities that embodied the character of Lois Lane,” Ward stated in his message. “Noel truly was Lois Lane, and for many of us, she was the first working woman seen on television.”

Neill is survived by her husband Hal Lierly and will be remembered by fans of Superman and Lois Lane, as the first Lois in film.
