Something wicked this way comes! Universal’s Wicked finally has a release date to get fans excited about the musical adaptation of the insanely popular Broadway show and book. The announcement was released on Thursday, and Wicked has snagged Dec. 20, 2019 as the day it will open in theaters for the whole world to see. This released date puts Wicked in a battle against an untitled live-action Disney film that is set to be released on the same day.

The film is set to be directed by Stephen Daldry with Marc Platt and Universal producing the film. The film will be based not only on the long running stage show, but also the source material for the Broadway musical Gregory Maquire’s novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. For the screen adaptation of the musical writer, Winnie Holzman and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz will return, bringing their much beloved music to the big screen.

With hit songs like “Popular” and “Defying Gravity”, we can only hope that the cast will bring the power and beauty of the musical to screen in the best way. Sadly, there are no current casting choices as of yet, so we’ll all have to sit and wait patiently for casting choices to be made.
