This just in, Black Manta will reportedly be the villain in the upcoming Aquaman film, starring Jason Mamoa. This will be Black Manta’s first appearance in a live-action film, but has appeared numerous times in animated DC Comics adaptation through the years. He’s even considered the ultimate villain to some. The news was first reported by TheWrap, who announced early Wednesday regarding the choice of main villain for the upcoming DC Universe film. Although the villain has yet to be cast, we can only imagine who they will pick to be Mamoa’s Aquaman’s opponent.

The character, Black Manta, was created in 1967 and is famous for killing Arthur Curry Jr.’s (a.k.a. Aquaman) son. In the newer comic storylines, it was revealed that Aquaman killed Manta’s father when he was just a boy, creating that desire for revenge on the hero. What really interesting about this choice in character, is the face that Manta eventually is imprisoned in the famous Belle Reve Prison (ring any bells?) and was propositioned by Amanda Waller to join Task Force X (a.k.a. the Suicide Squad) but he turned down the offer. Could we see him in more than just the upcoming Aquaman film then?

The film is set to be directed by James Wan with Will Beall penning the script. We have quite a wait time for the film, but it’s exciting to get some news about the DC line up!
