Based on Alan Moore’s classic Batman comic, Batman: The Killing Joke is headed our way as the next DC animated film from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The film will be released later this summer, with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment hosting a world premiere at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Ca.
“The Killing Joke” is a one-shot graphic novel that was released in 1988 where Alan Moore created his own take on Joker’s source and psychology. The story became so famous because it made Joker human, a tragic character who makes one mistake that affects his entire future and drove him to become insane and become The Joker. The story is also the explanation of how Batgirl (a.k.a. Barbara Gordon), becomes paralyzed and eventually takes on the identity of Oracle.
In this 10-minute behind the scenes featurette, we get to see the crew discuss the legacy of the comic and discuss the film and how they took the comic and made a feature length film out of it. To give the film more content, they expanded on the character of Barbara Gordon, hinting that it might attempt to make Batgirl an actual character and not just a victim. The great thing about the film, is you’ll hear a lot of familiar voices. Fans of Batman: The Animated Series will be happy to know that the cast is returning to reprise their roles for the film. One such voice you’ll hear in the film will be Mark Hamill, who voices the Joker. It’s said in the sneak peek that Hamill continually wanted to voice the Joker for “The Killing Joke” and is finally getting his chance, commenting that, “if people want to see a really nasty, vile Joker, this is the one.”
