The Martin Scorsese film that took twenty years to make is finally coming to the big screen this year. Paramount announced on Monday that the Oscar-winning director’s film Silence would be released on December 23, perfect for the Christmas season. The film stars Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver. It will follow the story of Jesuit priests in 17th-Century Japan as they face violence and persecution for their religion. The December 23 release will be limited, getting the film out in time for Oscar consideration. But the wide release of the film will in fact be sometime in January of 2017, similar to The Revenant last year.
Silence is based on the 1966 Shūsaku Endō novel of the same name and was adapted for the screen by Jay Cocks. This isn’t the first time that Scorsese and Cocks is working together, as they collaborated on Gangs of New York in 2002.
